 Weather:   Hurricane Bertha 1996

  UTC

Hurricane Bertha was the first  storm to pass over the Carolina Beach, North Carolina area since Hurricane Diana on September 13, 1984, nearly 12 years earlier. My friend Doug, my Mom and I  rode out the storm at my mother's house near Carolina Beach School.

The yellow strip shows the approximate path of the eye of the hurricane as it traveled through the area. The track and strength of the hurricane were determined by using data from the National Weather Service report on Bertha. The red square (Carolina Beach) shows our position relative to the path of the center of the storm. The red dots along the yellow path indicate the interpolated position of the hurricane's center at the time each of the accompanying videos were taken. Videos can be viewed by clicking on the adjacent numbered boxes. Photographs from around Carolina Beach can be viewed by clicking here or the area around the red square on the map.

All the videos were taken using a JVC Compact VHS camcorder: Model GR-AX70 and a Canon AE-1 35mm SLR was used to make the still photographs.
