 Weather:   Hurricane Fran  1996

  UTC

Hurricane Fran was the second and more powerful of the storms to strike the Cape Fear region of Southeast North Carolina during the 1996 season. As with Hurricane Bertha my friend Doug and I rode out the storm  with my Mother in her house at Carolina Beach, North Carolina.

The map shows the path of the hurricane as it traveled through the area. The approximate track and strength of the hurricane were determined by using the 2 and 8PM National Weather Service (black squares) reports for September 5, 1996. The red square shows our position relative to the path of the center of the storm. The red dots along the yellow path indicate the interpolated position of the hurricane's center at the time each of the accompanying videos were taken. Videos can be viewed by clicking on the adjacent numbered boxes. Photographs and information about Carolina Beach can be viewed by clicking here or that part of the map.

All the videos were taken using a JVC Compact VHS camcorder: Model GR-AX70 and a Canon AE-1 35mm SLR was used to make the still photographs.
