What is a  Mesonet Map

A mesonet map is a graphical way to show changes in the weather for a given area by using the data from a group or network of weather stations. The map above is for the Foothills and surrounding areas of western North Carolina. The colored boxes show the location and current Fahrenheit temperature of each reporting weather station. The mesonet map is updated every 10 minutes, but the individual weather station's data update times vary and are scheduled by their respective owners. My station (KNCMORGA3) located southwest of Morganton is set to update to the Weather Underground site every 5 minutes.

To generate the above mesonet map, Ambient Software's Virtual Weather Station downloads the area weather stations data from the Weather Underground website. It uses the information to create the mesonet map, then at the selected interval it is uploaded to the www.silvercreekobservatory.net website.
